Concert Review: The Internet @ The Echo, Los Angeles 5/25/12
Friday night in Echo park The Internet made their live debut in front of sold-out crowd of about 350 people. The intimate setting was ideal. When I first walked into The Echo I was greeted by the thumping, tripped-out beats that DJ Hal Williams (AKA Pyramid Vritra) was playing out of his laptop to a dark room with spinning lights projecting and bouncing around the walls of the club.
Kilo Kish soon made her way out onto the stage and was warmly greeted by the crowd. They clearly were aware that this was Kilo’s first LA show. Her 20-minute set mainly consisted of material from her debut project, The Homeschool EP, which is produced largely in part by The Internet. The highlight of the set was the Hal Williams produced closer “Tb70”, that features an astonishing, frenetic beat full of distorted synths, hard bass slaps and rhythmically varied snare patterns that were well accentuated by the club’s excellent sound-system.
The Internet’s band took the stage a few minutes later and once Syd The Kyd (AKA Frisco The Star Child) came into the crowd’s view, the room erupted into cheers, whistles and even hysterical screams. Although Syd has been known for her tendencies to shy awa from the spotlight in the past, it was clear on Friday that she is a star, and that she probably even enjoys it.
I had some trepidations going in about the quality of their live show considering that it was their first performance and that by Syd’s own admission, she isn’t the strongest of vocalists, but my concerns were almost instantly assuaged once the band kicked into their first song. They started off with a cover of Justin Timberlake’s ”Señorita” in place of their album opener “Violet Nude Women”. Syd announced to the crowd that they would be playing their album Purple Naked Ladies in it’s entirety for the most part. They also added in a couple of tracks from their Bonus Songs EP as well as a new tune from their next album and a solo ballad by their keyboardist and collaborator Tay Walker, who impressed the crowd tremendously with his pitch-perfect singing voice.
For the most part on record, the songs from Purple Naked Ladies tended to take on a laid-back, ethereal and spaced-out vibe. These are qualities that are not so easy to replicate effectively in a live setting. However when played live, all the songs took on a funky and soulful new life thanks to the incredibly tight and well-practiced live band. The band was composed of two keyboardists, a bass player and a drummer. Each played their part perfectly and hit every fill and pause exactly in the right places. It was evident that they had spent a lot of time re-working and transforming the songs into pieces that would tear a live audience to the ground, which is exactly what they did. Every song was full of warmth and depth that moved fluidly and psychedelically. At times Syd’s voice would get lost or waiver a bit, but due to her onstage coolness, the crowd’s energy and the efficiency of her backing band the show never skipped a beat. It also helped that every guest from the album was there to do their parts. Left Brain came out for “Cocaine” and  ”Lincoln”, along with Mike G. Kilo Kish and Hal came out for their features, as well as Coco Owino, whose guest spot on “Visions” may have been the feature of the night.
All in all, the one constant feeling that was present throughout the whole night was one of pure joy. Even despite some of the darker lyrical themes present in the music, everyone was elated. The show felt like a big celebration of sorts and a coming out party for future star, Syd The Kyd. There were such happy, positive vibes throughout the entire venue. As someone who enjoys all things Odd Future, it was a welcome departure from the usual testosterone-fueled rage-fests that are OF rap concerts. Everybody in the Wolf Gang was there for support though (including Frank Ocean), along with many of the parents of those performing. It truly felt like one, big, happy family affair.
